Dissection of the Borough of Islington

Islington is an inner London borough with a population of over 200.000. It spreads over an area of 5.74 square miles and is the second smallest borough in the English capital. Islington is home to several world famous London districts and places of interest which attract both local and foreign visitors by the number.

Finsbury lies in the southern parts of the borough in close proximity to the City of London. Throughout the years the areas has been the home of numerous notable people such as Eric Maxon, Dadabhoy Naoroji, Arthur Mullard, Violet Kray and George Cruikshank. Finsbury, EC1, is linked to the other parts of the city via several bus routes. The nearest tube stations are situated in the adjacent districts of Angel and Barbican.

The area of Clerkenwell, WC1, has a population of about 12.000 people and is one of Islington’s most popular and visited districts. The area is home to some of London’s finest restaurants, public houses and bars. The Crown Tavern is perhaps the district’s most notorious pub as it is believed that Vladimir Lenin met young Joseph Stalin in it during the latter’s visit of London in 1903. Clerkenwell is served by a number of bus routes which pass through it on a regular basis.

Farringdon, EC1, is one of the borough’s most important districts as it is the location of Farringdon Station which is one of the busiest transportation hubs in the English capital. Opened in 1863, the station sits on lines (Circle, Hammersmith and Fulham, and Metropolitan) from the London Underground and the National Rail Network. In the upcoming it will commence to serve the Crossrail as well. The latest numbers show that it provided transportation services to over 35 million passengers annually. The station is also considered to be Farringdon’s focal landmark as it is a listed as a Grade II building.

The Almeida Theatre is arguably the area’s most noted entertainment venue. Originally opened in 1833 as reading rooms, the building was rebuilt as a theatre during the early 1980s and remodeled intensively at the turn of the 21st century. Today, it has a maximum of 325 seats which are spread on two levels and stages both original and classical plays regularly. Islington, N1, is served by its own station which was established in 1850 and is currently used by over 40 million people on a yearly basis.

Canonbury is a residential district which lies in the eastern parts of Islington. The area has an estimate population of 12.000 people. The Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art is perhaps the district’s most famous landmark. The museum is dedicated to contemporary Italian art and was founded by renowned American writer and sociologist Eric Estorick. The Canonbury Tower and Canonbury Square are other well-known local sites which attract tourists. The North Bridge House School is beyond any doubt the area’s most famous educational facility. It was founded in 1939 and provides top quality education to pupils form the ages of 21/2 to 18.

The area of De Beauvoir Town, N1, lies at about four miles from the junction of Charing Cross. It is mostly located in the Borough of Islington but a small portion of it falls within the boundaries of the Borough of Hackney. The district is mainly inhabited by young professionals and commuters who work in the other parts of London. It is connected to the remainder of the capital via several bus routes and nearby tube and railway stations.

Holloway is situated in the northern parts of the Islington and is known throughout the city for its multicultural and multiethnic population. The Orion Building is perhaps the district’s most noted structure. It was designed by Daniel Libesking and is part of the London Metropolitan University. Holloway, N7, is heavily associated with the world famous football club of Arsenal as the team is based in the area.
