Exploring Richmond upon Thames

The London Borough of Richmond upon Thames has an estimate population of 195.000 people and lies in the southwestern parts of the English capital. It is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful areas in the city due to the fact that it is the locations of numerous internationally known monuments, touristic sites, entertainment venues and neighbourhoods.

The suburb of Ham is mostly situated in Richmond upon Thames. However a small portion of it lies in the adjacent Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. The area has a population of over 10.000 people. Ham House is beyond any doubt the most prominent landmark of the district. The mansion is considered to be one of the beautiful and fascinating 17th century edifices in Europe. It was designed by Robert Smythson and completed in 1610. It was listed as a Grade I structure during the mid-20th century. Ham Common is the suburb’s main green space and spreads over 120 acres of lush green lands. It is identified as a Local Nature Reserve. Ham, TW10, is linked to the other parts of the city by several bus routes.

Barnes High StreetBarnes, SW13, lies in the northern parts of the borough at about six miles from the junction of Charing Cross. It is home to approximately 20.000 people    and is considered to be one of the city’s most desirable residential areas. The district is home to an abundance of world famous entertainment venues and public houses. It is also the location of some of London’s most beautiful churches. Barnes is served by two railway stations which combined provide transportation services to over 3.5 million people on a yearly basis.

The district of Fulwell, TW12, has an estimate population of 10.000 people and is renowned for being the location of Fulwell Golf Course which is one of the finest in the British capital. It shares common boundaries with the neighbourhoods of Whitton from the north, Strawberry Hill from the east, Hanworth from the west and Hampton Hill from the south. The district is served by its own railway station which dates back to 1864 and is used by almost 500.000 passengers annually.

Eel Pie Island, TW1, is an island in the River Thames which was once the location of the legendary Eel Pie Island Hotel, a prominent entertainment venue which was mysteriously destroyed by fire during the early 1970s. Hampton Hill PlayhouseThe village of Hampton Wick lies in the southeastern parts of the Borough of Richmond upon Thames. It has a population of over 10.000 and is considered to be one of the greenest areas in London as it is home to Bushy Park one of the city’s Royal Parks. The district is the location of the Hampton Wick Royal Cricket Club which was established in 1863. Hampton Wick, KT1, is served by its own railway station which is used by over one million passengers annually.

Castelnau is situated at about five miles from Charing Cross and is one of the smallest areas in the borough. The district is known throughout the United Kingdom for being the site of 20 pairs of outstanding classical villas. The edifices date back to the mid-19th century and were commissioned by Major Charles Lestock Boileau. All villas were designed by renowned British architect, William Laxton.

The suburban area of Hampton, TW12, is one of Richmond’s most popular districts. It is the location of Hampton Court Palace which dates back to the 16th century. The building is still owned by the British Royal Family and is presently one of London’s most visited and well-known landmarks. Hampton is also home to a number of listed buildings and prominent places of worship.

The area of East Sheen, SW14, is shortly known as Sheen and has a population of about 10.000. The Triangle is perhaps the district’s most renowned landmark. It is a traffic island with a mid-18th century milestone (marking the 10th mile between the City of London and Cornhill) and a war memorial. The area is also home to the Richmond Park Academy which is one of the best secondary schools in the city.
